How it's Made

When people think about handcrafted furniture, they often focus on the frame, upholstery, or overall design. However, some of the most important details are the smallest ones.

Take the humble upholstery button.

At Kingsgate Furniture, every button used in our furniture is individually handcrafted in our workshop. It’s a traditional process that requires skill, precision, and attention to detail, helping to create the distinctive finish found on our sofas, chairs, and upholstered furniture.

A Traditional Process

Unlike mass-produced furniture where components are often manufactured in huge quantities, our buttons are made one at a time.

Each button begins with individual components that are carefully assembled by hand. The chosen fabric is positioned precisely before being pressed into shape using traditional equipment. Every button is then inspected to ensure it meets our standards before being used in production.

While it may seem like a small detail, these buttons play a significant role in the finished appearance of a piece of furniture.

Why It Matters

Handcrafted buttons allow us to achieve a level of quality and consistency that simply isn’t possible with generic, off-the-shelf alternatives.

By making each button individually, we can ensure:

  • A perfect match with the chosen upholstery fabric
  • Consistent sizing and finish
  • Superior durability
  • A more refined and luxurious appearance

It’s these small details that help elevate a piece from ordinary furniture to something truly special.

Preserving Traditional Craftsmanship

The skills involved in making upholstery buttons have been part of furniture manufacturing for generations. In an age where automation is becoming increasingly common, we remain proud to retain many of the traditional techniques that have defined British furniture making for decades.

The process may take longer, but the results speak for themselves.

The Difference Is in the Details

When you invest in quality furniture, you’re investing in much more than fabric and timber. You’re investing in the expertise, care, and craftsmanship that goes into every stage of production.

From the frame right through to the final button, every element contributes to the finished piece.

It’s a small component, but it’s another example of the dedication and attention to detail that goes into every item of furniture we produce.
